So, what do we make of these numbers?
  • Riverside County continues its slow, steady increase in population, with the majority of that increase favoring Democrats.
  • During this 21-month period, Riverside County ADDED an average of 1156 new Democrats each month, for a net increase of 24,281 new Democrats. On the other side of the scale, Republicans LOST 460 registrants and NPP registrations decreased by 4,009.
Where did those voters go?
  • Some may have moved away from the area. NPP registrants are usually pro-Democratic, so we believe some portion of the 4,009 NPP loss re-registered as Democrats. Others may have chosen one of the small, other parties.
  • The December 2022 NPP figure of 269,542, or 20.55% of the total is the third-largest sub-group in this array, and in some ways is the most important number in this analysis. These are, for the most part, the “undecided voters”: They don’t want to commit to a specific political party, but wish, instead, to learn more about the declared candidates and campaigns of both major Parties before making their voting decision. These are the “persuadable” voters who will be pursued by both Parties in tight races.
At Democratic Headquarters of the Desert, a large segment of our contact with the public consists of incoming phone calls, emails and walk-ins with questions regarding the caller’s current Voter Registration status. Our trained volunteers happily assist voters with their questions. Many of those questions are from Republicans and NPP voters seeking our help and guidance in switching their registration to Democrat. It’s a very satisfying part of our work!
